    B251 - neue Endstufenplatine & Instandsetzung

    Hallo Revox-Freunde,

Schaltnetzteil vom linken (defekten) Kanal getrennt: geht sofort in "Power On" und lässt sich normal I/O schalten

    thomas

Hello from Canada Dear REVOX friend. I'm new to this forum and thank you to the moderators! I'm glad Google translate exist!

I have a very good experience with the B251 as I restored two so far and spent a great amount of time studying the circuit. This not an amplifier to mess around with, components need to be selected carefully, especially into the Power Supply.

My best recommendations to start with are: Change all RIFA film capacitors, everywhere and also change all electrolytic capacitors, everywhere! I use Nichicon Muse "Green" for the signal path and KZ or FG for the local power supply (Input, Volume and Output board). I also use KL near the chips. You will often lose one channel because of a dead capacitor on the Volume board, don't try to save money or time by not changing all capacitors, you're wasting your time.

I'm glad you bought the aftermarket PCB from speaker-terminal, it is of really good quality and works 100%, I did the same. Check carefully the emitter resistors (.56 Ohm) to ensure they have not drifted. You do not need to match the transistors on the power Amp Board because the transistors are matched on the BIAS board instead.

You will need to change also the pre-drivers and drivers transistor (BF471/BF472 + A968/A2238). Those have overheated for a long time and even if they test good, they won't drive the power transistors strong enough. Trust me on this! Otherwise, your B251 will play weak and dull. Some really good modern transistors exist to replace them efficiently.

So, I think you're on the right track ask feel free to ask more questions.

        Hi Wally,
        hi Housemaster,

happy new year and thanks for your inputs.

As said, power supply PCB seems to be OK. Completely dismantled it during cleaning session and RIFA replaced by more stable WIMA types, indeed the RIFA blew away already. Replaced also the filter condensators, beside the multi-pole versions (checked them and they are they are being told to be much more reliable than the axial ones).

The poweramp PCB RIFAs have been replaced before the complete new built on new PCB - same result as written above.
In general I do not replace components "blind" - if I find a bad one, I 1st replace the bad (to check) and afterwards replace in pairs/sections. Just to understand what went wrong, and who can guess, how long the fresher component will last while the old did it already 40 years?!
But this was,is and will remain a philosophical question ;-)

Checked already on the Volume PCB: all were still within tolerances (at least electrolytic types).

Thanks for the hint on the .56Ohm resistors... Indeed they drifted particulary away to up to .72Ohms .

Reg. Transistor matching; OK - this is what I understood as well from the schematic, but was not 100% sure (am only ceramical engineer ;-)). Thanks!

Reg BF471/BF472 + A968/A2238 substitutes: do you have a recommendation for these types?

My progress til today: 95% finished on the power amp soldering... 18pF C's and transistors missing... Now my soldering station gave up...

So, thanks again for your very useful information and help already!

        kind rgds,

        thomas

        @Moderators:
Is it preferred to post in german or english in this forum ? ( @Wally, sorry - am new here as well and just want to check..)

You're welcome my friend. BTW, I'm native french and english is my secondary language but I do not speak German unfortunately and I'm assuming it's OK with the moderators...

RE: Power Supply. I do not know in deep what you did on the power supply but make sure you changed the voltage bridge from 220V to 240V. Otherwise, the entire amplifier will run at higher voltage meaning running hotter for nothing but mostly the chips (microcontrollers) will also run at higher voltage and this isn't good at all...

Electrolytic Capacitors: My take on this is, aged capacitors, ie 40 years old +, have gone way beyond the manufacturer's recommended service life. Even if they test good, they have become more or less time bombs. Do yourself a favor, change all electrolytics. Even more, this amplifier sounds much better with new capacitors.

BF471/BF472: 2SC3503 / 2SA138. I found them to be the closest match from the originals you can get. And based on my experiment on the scope, they run just perfect.

A968/A2238: Sanyo 2SC2344 / 2SA1011. Again, best replacements you can still get today. Check B+D Entreprises, they have stock and trusted source.

          Keep us posted!

No all controllers ran from a stabilised Voltage. Even the 25V Flash voltage for the ROM is stabilised. But changing to 240V is indeed a good choice

              Dear friends,

apologies for this very late feedback on your hints and support (which I appreciate!). As having been stopped by a damaged soldering station (while replacement received was also defect) I was a little bit fed up with electronic stuff and needed some time to make up my mind again. Autumn-beginning "reloaded" my cells to face the challenge again.

So, meanwhile, what happened and as per today I finalized the reassy of the speaker-terminal Power amp PCB - quality is very good. Unfortunately not with the expected result, which is for sure not related to the pcb "reprint", as far as I can see
              Components have been replaced:
              - Resistors 100%
              - Capacitors: Elkos and some ceramic types, not foil condensators
              - Transistors: 100% "on top" - found some "orginal types" (hopefully no fake components - then no worth for the rest below ;-))
but not Q120-Q125/Q320-Q325 (downside Transistors, attached to heating pipe)

After a hopefully serious check plugged in:
              - without BIAS PCB: start OK
              - with BIAS: protection mode
means: plugging in the amp LCD is having light and the peak-meter LCD is showing 50% but no relais switching and no further switching possible.

              - removing speaker PCB connectors from Power Amp PCB w/ connected BIAS:
keeping signal (orange & brown) connected: protection mode
keeping grey on both or individual: amp turns on immediately

I have another B251 - will change BIAS PCB to cross check but am grateful for any other hint as the schematic tell me there remain a lot of options...

Thanks for your inputs and have a great week-end.

              kindest regards and apologies again

              thomas

Speaker PCB sends feedback to Stabilization board to detect DC current from output. If DC current is detected then puts the amp in protection mode. Most likely you have DC at the output and you must check why.

                  Thanks Wally,

BIAS PCB did not provide any changes... am on business trip but guess that I mixed pins on the BF471/472 (hopefully not).

...killed my Power Supply transformer by stupid mistake during testing (please always check if there is any conductive part left on the pcb) ... Topic on hold until I find some replacement. Thanks so far for your support...

I suggest to always use a test bulb during the testing phase. if something goes wrong, the bulb will take the hit instead of the components. I'm using a 300 watts bulb along with variac when testing.
