    B77 Wiedergabe ausschließlich

    Hi All,

I recently acquired this B77, in good condition, that has been assembled to be playback only. Serial Number is 32525, and it is 38cm/s.

Oscillator board, record amplifier board and input amplifier board are absent. The audio-inter-connect board is modified, and the record and erase heads look normal but have no electrical connections.

The front panel of the machine is as normal except the speed numerals are metric (19 and 38), all record and input switches present.

I can't be certain it came from the factory like this, or if it was modified by someone after purchase. I cannot understand the reason for removing the head wiring though, if it was not built this way at the factory.

Hi, playback only versions of A77 and B77 were pretty common. You still need the heads to ensure stable tape transport. The tape travel path has to remain the same as with record/playback recorders plus you have to ensure low phase noise. Hope this helps.

      That makes much sense.
It is interesting to see that the 'non funtional' heads appear to be complete heads with all the usual magnetic pole pieces, shields, and so on, merely lacking the electrical windings. As such, one might think that very little money was actually saved by making a special non-recording version.
The input selector swiches, the ready/safe switches, level controls are all present as normal, so no money saved there.

You are saving three boards at the price of manually modifying standard parts (heads, interconnection PCB), Bottom line should be nil.

Revox claims to have offered 56 different versions (configurations) of the B77. Production was highly individual. How they ever made money remains a mystery to me.
